The first question most people ask — and it matters more than you might think.
The abortion pill also called medication abortion, and made up of two drugs, mifepristone (sometimes still called RU486) and misoprostol is FDA approved through 12 weeks of pregnancy. After 12 weeks, it’s no longer an option, and the procedure changes.
A lot of people significantly underestimate how far along they actually are — especially with irregular cycles, hormonal birth control, or a missed period that wasn’t actually their first. A free ultrasound at our center tells you your gestational age, so you don’t pay for an appointment at an abortion clinic only to find out you’re outside the window.
Here’s what’s currently in effect in North Carolina:
Most abortions are limited to the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Limited exceptions exist for rape or incest (up to 20 weeks), life-limiting fetal anomalies (up to 24 weeks), and medical emergencies. A 72-hour waiting period is required between an in-person consultation at the abortion facility and the procedure itself.
An ultrasound is required at the abortion facility before the procedure. (Our free ultrasound is for your own medical information — it doesn’t replace the one the abortion provider does, but it tells you what you need to know *before* you go elsewhere.)
The abortion pill itself is limited to 10 weeks** under FDA guidance, even though NC’s overall limit is 12.
If you’re under 18, North Carolina requires parental consent for an abortion, or a judicial bypass. You do not need parental consent for a pregnancy test, an ultrasound, or to talk through your options with our medical staff.
